It all starts with an amazing script.
In Twenty-seven contact hours over nine sessions, you will be guided by Award-Winning Writer/Director Tim Marshall on the tools, technique and process required to write a short film screenplay. Tim will then mentor you as you write your first, second, and polished draft of your short film, as well as how to pitch your shoot to producers and funding bodies, as well as some tips on producing the short yourself!
A feature film script can seem daunting, but as an actor, a great short film can be your platform to the character you always wished you wanted to play, a story that hold special significance to you, and recognition at a film festival!
Course DATES & STRUCTURE:
11th July - WEEK 1 - Class 1 - Screenwriting workshop #1
Structure, Dramatic Question, The Less is More Philosophy for Short Film Writing + Sharing ideas & career goals (and setting up your boss goals for the short film your will write and make!) (ideally a 4 hour class - depending on numbers)
14th July - WEEK 1 - Class 2 - Screenwriting workshop #2
Character, Character Journey & Themes aka how to make the audience care about your short film, talk about it, and remember it.
18th July - WEEK 2 - Class 1 - Screenwriting workshop #3
The screenwriter’s toolbox (all the tools you need to equip yourself with to ensure your screenplay is strong & formatting (making sure your script looks up to industry standard)
21st July - WEEK 2 - Class 2 - Outlining & Practice Exercises
Start of Week 3 - Outlines due
25th July - WEEK 3 - Class 1 - Production
Production Essentials (How to make it properly) + Creating the pitch package for your short film
28th July - WEEK 3 - Class 2 - Script Outline meetings
1st August - WEEK 4 - Break
End of Week 4 - 1st drafts due
8th August - WEEK 5 - 1st draft meetings
15th August - WEEK 6 - Break
End of Week 6 - 2nd drafts due
22nd August - WEEK 7 - 2nd draft table read
Start of Week 8 - 2nd draft polish due
29th August - WEEK 8 - Final feedback meeting of 3rd draft + next steps

ABOUT TIM:
Your teacher and mentor, Tim Marshall is an award-winning writer/director who, after having his short film Followers play in competition at Sundance Film Festival and SXSW, has had film and television projects in development with Screen Queensland and Screen Australia. His most recent feature film Closing Night, co-produced by Orange Entertainment Company (ABC's 'Retrograde') is currently in post-production, with the support of Screen Queensland. He has worked with some of the world’s top script consultants including Meg LeFauve (writer, Inside Out), Andrew Ellard (writer, Red Dwarf, IT Crowd), and Lynne Vincent McCarthy (script editor of The Babadook and The Nightingale). With years of knowledge and industry training under his belt, Tim is ready to share his insight and guide you on unlocking your skills as a writer!
