In this 4-week course you will gain a solid foundation and understanding of the US Accent whilst learning muscle memory, so you can be impulsive, spontaneous and emotional in any scene without thinking about your accent
For those hoping to work in the US market - not to mention, all the US productions being filmed in Australia - mastering the American accent is vital. This course involves specialist coaching with our US accent coach, Barbara, and will go from the basic structural elements of language in the mouth to encompassing cultural characteristics that will authenticate the accent.
This course is for beginner to intermediate level actors and will cover vocal focus and sound placement, emphasis and stress, the dominant American ‘rhotic’ R sound, key vowels and consonants as well as applying the accent to your scene work to make the accent sound authentically you!!
With so many US productions shooting in Australia it is vital to prepare and practice an authentic accent before you get that US accent audition.
Course Outcomes:
Develop an understanding of accents and tone your vocal instrument
Learn the key indicators of the General American accent
Learn to relax and perform true to yourself, honouring your impulses and emotions while maintaining your accent
Practicing your accent with scenes and monologues, with feedback from Barbara
Course Structure:
Foundation work on body, breath, resonance, projection, pitch and rhythm for the General American accent
Articulation exercises and other techniques to warm up and prepare your vocal instrument for the much more ‘active’ GenAm accent (when compared to the Aussie drawl)
Scene work with materials from plays, Film and TV to practice your new accent.

Carmen Lysiak is a professional voice trainer and voice and dialect coach based in Sydney. She works in a wide genre of voice based artistic enterprises including
professional and non professional theatre, film and TV, drama based courses in universities and colleges in Australia and overseas. Carmen has worked for every major professional theatre company in Sydney and worked with many of Australia’s best known performers. They include Nancye Hayes, Todd McKenney, Caroline O’Connor, Yvonne Kenny, Leah Purcell, Brendan Cowell, Colin Moody & Peter Carroll.
