In John’s Words

An American 1971 psychological thriller which was starred Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walter in her first major movie role and Donna Mills. Play Misty For Me was a landmark film as it was Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut and the beginning of an extraordinary career as a movie Director. He has since another 30 odd films to his credit. Play Misty For Me came in under budget and mad a great profit. It has to be noted that virtually none of Eastwoods films have lost money and some were monster successes for Warner Bros. In Eastwood’s own words: “ After seventeen years of bouncing my head against the wall, hanging around sets, maybe influencing certain camera set-ups with my own opinions, watching actors go through kinds of hell without any help, and working with bot good directors and bad ones, I’m at the point where I’m ready to make my own pictures. I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors.”

The film premiered in October 1971 at the San Francisco Film Festival. It cost $950,000 to make (50,000 under budget) and grossed $10.6 million at the box office.
