MISERY & KATHY BATES

This week we will be looking at Kathy Bates’ film, Misery.

About Misery:

A best-selling novelist is on his way home after completing his latest book when he meets with a car accident. He is rescued by an obsessed fan, only to discover that he is her prisoner.

REMEMBER:
You have this week to watch the selected films.
Take notes, and pay particular attention to the acting.

In John’s Words:

Kathy Bates, a then unknown actress, won seven  Best Actress Awards including an Oscar for her extraordinary performance in this adaption of a Steven King novel. It rocketed her from obscurity to stardom although she had had received a Tony Award nomination and then won an Obie award in 1988. This was on broadway, of course and as far as a Screen Actress was cernecerned she was still a nobody. Until Misery, that is. Misery is a 1990’s psychological thriller also starred James Caan (Rollerball and The Godfather  etc)and which had a budget of 20 million dollars and grossed 61.3million at the box office.

Directed by Rob Reiner(who also directed Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men etc) and written by William Goldman (who also wrote and won Academy Awards for, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men) This is the only Stephen King novel to have won an Oscar and the famous “hobbling” scene in the film is ranked #12 on Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments. A great movie. Not to be missed with Kathy Bates’ performance a reminder to all actors that evil doesn’t have to played as evil.
