Just because you failed doesn’t mean you’re a failure

As children, we failed all the time. You failed using a spoon, talking, walking, all the things. Things you probably take for granted right now. But through these failures you learnt the skills you needed to live.

As adults, we have the ability to structure our own environment in a way that we can literally avoid failure (and ultimately, stop growing). But, as an actor you are lucky…

You get to fail all the time!

Yay!

You are thrust in a position where you can’t avoid failure (auditions!). Yes, this can be tiring, especially when you are getting knocked back every week. This may sound bad - but it’s actually great.

Failure means that you are operating outside your abilities, and are forcing yourself to learn news skills so you can adapt to new circumstances. Think back on your so-called ‘biggest failures’, and you will see they were all growing opportunities, that you can learn and develop from.

Failure isn’t bad. But the fear of failure is.

You have the power to decide how you approach each situation. You can enter a situation stressed, anxious, beating yourself up and putting extra pressure on yourself…

Or you can enter situations with a sense of play, joy, and committed preparation developed through all the ‘failures’ you’ve made in the past.

Worst case scenario? You learn what not to do and you can apply that to your next audition, class, job, or performance!
