One of the Best Self Tapes We’ve Seen

We LOVE “Everything All At Once”.

From Michelle Yeoh’s incredibly versatile, physical and emotional performance, to the sheer loveable character that is Waymond Wong, to the hilarious and awe-inspiring martial arts, the Hot Dog Finger Universe, the list goes on and on and on.

But this was all done with the helping hand of the editor; special effects, sound effects and score to evoke an audiences reaction, capture our attention and engage us with the story.

A self tape has none of that. And that is what makes Stephanie Hsu’s audition so gosh darn amazing and why it is our favourite part of the film (and it wasn’t even really part of the film!).

Her ability to create tension, dispel tension, play with her reader, create space and pace, and even take direction in her stride without batting an eyelid. If you scrolled past the video to read this then scroll back up and watch it. And if you’re reading this while it’s playing in the back ground, stop reading and pay attention.

When we are asked what it takes to land a big role on a film, this is what it takes. No tricks, special camera angles or fancy lighting.

Hsu was not playing around! She had a clear vision of Jobu rocketing around multiple different universes at the same time. She has a complete command of the text, is fully committed to the moment and the stakes, but isn’t afraid to show her innate charisma, breaking audition conventions to put her own spin on the tape.

Bring this to your next audition and you will be sure to make an impact.
